How to Get Your AZ License in Mississauga: Complete Step-by-Step Guide
If you’re planning to start a high-paying trucking career in Ontario, getting your AZ License is the first major step. Mississauga is one of the best places in the province to complete your training because it offers strong job opportunities, large transportation hubs, and access to quality truck training schools like Trukademy.
This guide covers everything you need to know: eligibility, training requirements, costs, the MELT program, the road test, and how to start working immediately after earning your licence.
What Is an AZ License in Ontario?
The AZ License allows you to operate:
- Tractor-trailers
- Heavy combination vehicles
- Trucks and trailers with Air Brakes
- Long-haul and cross-border commercial vehicles
This licence is required for most high-paying trucking jobs in Ontario and across Canada.
Step 1: Check if You Are Eligible for the AZ License
You must meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Hold a valid Ontario G licence
- Have a clean driving record
- Be able to pass a vision test
- Be medically fit (must complete a Medical Report for Commercial Drivers)
If you meet these conditions, you can begin training.
Step 2: Complete the Mandatory MELT Program (Mandatory Entry-Level Training)
Since 2020, Ontario requires all AZ applicants to complete the MELT Program before booking the road test.
The MELT program includes:
✔ Classroom theory
Transport regulations, safety rules, trip planning, logbooks, documentation.
✔ In-yard training
Coupling/uncoupling, pre-trip inspections, air brakes, backing, and safety checks.
✔ On-road driving
Highway driving, turning, lane management, shifting, defensive driving, and real-world scenarios.
Trukademy provides MELT training in Mississauga, Calgary & Red Deer, helping students learn faster with personalized instruction.
Step 3: Prepare for Your Air Brake (Z-Endorsement) Requirement
To drive an AZ vehicle, you need a Z-Endorsement.
This includes:
- Air brake theory
- Hands-on demonstration
- Practical inspection training
- A written air brake test
Most AZ courses (including Trukademy’s programs) include the Air Brake endorsement as part of the training.
Step 4: Practice for the Road Test in Mississauga
The AZ road test includes:
- Pre-trip inspection
- Coupling & uncoupling
- Backing maneuvers
- On-road driving evaluation
Mississauga’s testing centres are busy, so proper practice is key. Trukademy instructors help students train in real-test conditions so they feel fully confident on exam day.
Step 5: Book and Pass Your Ontario AZ Road Test
Once you complete MELT, your school will certify you on the DriveTest system.
You can then book your road test at a DriveTest Centre near Mississauga.
During the test, you must show competence in:
- Safe operation of a tractor-trailer
- Pre-trip & air brake checks
- Backing, turns, and lane changes
- Highway and city driving
After successful completion, your AZ license will be added to your Ontario driver’s licence.
Step 6: Start Applying for AZ Driving Jobs
Mississauga offers strong job opportunities including:
- Local delivery trucking
- Long-haul trucking
- Dedicated routes
- Cross-border trucking
- Fleet and logistics companies based near Pearson Airport
With an AZ license, many drivers start earning between $27–$45/hour or more depending on the route and company.
